
Shukti Roy (1962) a former teacher of English in Kamala Girls’ School one of the most renowned schools in Kolkata has opted for voluntary retirement in 2015 to pursue her literary mission as a translator, essayist, publisher and writer. She is the Secretary of Los Hispanofilos, a Kolkata based erudite centre of research and translation. to and from the Spanish language. Her translation works include the classics from English and Spanish literature as the Bangla translation of ‘Platero y yo’in 2017 on the occasion of the centenary of the Spanish literary masterpiece written by the Spanish Nobel Laureate Juan Ramon Jimenez. Apart from this she has translated stories and poems of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Federico Garcia Lorca, Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, David Huerta and Francisco Munoz Soler. She also has edited more than 10 books containing the translation from the treasure trove of Spanish literature. Stories and novels written by her have won a number of literary awards in Kolkata including Nirendranath Chakraborty Literary Award as the writer of ‘Shraboner Chithi’ a well acclaimed novel.
